Box ScoreMar. 20, 2016 – The North Central College women's lacrosse team showed much resilience and resolve to battle back from an early deficit, but it was not enough as they were defeated in overtime 16-15 by Southwestern College in Georgetown, Texas on Sunday.
The Pirates would race out to an early lead, scoring with 27:45 left to play, however thanks to a successful clear attempt, senior
Gina Fisher would then level the scores with 26:23 remaining. This goal was of particular significance, as it equaled the Cardinals all-time scoring record of 165 goals, held by head coach
Danielle Fiala.
With 9:18 on the clock, the Cardinals found themselves facing a 5-1 deficit, but showed resilience and were able to narrow the margin to 6-3 at halftime. Junior
Madison Maas would score twice, with 5:01 left to play, thanks to an assist from sophomore
Emily Zadny, then again with 3:49 remainng, courtesy of an assist from Fisher.
The Pirates would score 27 seconds into the second half, but the Cardinals refused to drop their heads and battled back to eventually level the scores 8-8 with 21:34 left on the clock. This came courtesy of goals from seniors
Bianca Perri and
Claire Norfleet, Fisher, and two consecutive goals from Zadny.
Fisher's goal with 27:14 not only helped the Cardinals trim the lead, but was also the goal that made her the Cardinals all-time leading goal scorer.
The remainder of the second half would be a back-and-forth affair, with both team's trading goals. With the Cardinals down 15-14, Fisher would score at the conclusion of the period, leveling the score and sending the game into overtime.
The overtime period would be evenly matched, until the Pirates scored with 57 seconds remaining to give them the victory. Given that the Cardinals had played the day prior, coming back from a deficit and playing an exceptional second half is something to be proud of and build on heading into the next game.
Maas and Fisher led the team with four goals each, while Zadny finished with three, junior
Kara Stevens with two, while Norfleet and Perri had one apiece. Norfleet and Zadny secured four draw controls each, leading the team, while senior
Kailey Robbins and Fisher led in caused turnovers with three each. Junior
Kat Schultz collected eight groundballs, while Fisher and Robbins each had four.
After a day of rest and recovery, the Cardinals will conclude their Texas trip on March 22, when they take on Linfield College at 2 P.M., in Georgetown, Texas. Â Live video coverage can be accessed by clickingÂ
