Sep 17., 2016 – In a game featuring no shortage of scoring opportunities, the North Central College men's soccer team were defeated 2-0 by Dominican University on Saturday night, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The first half was a success for the Cardinals everywhere except for on the scoreboard. Senior defender Nate Donovan came close to scoring 15:58 into the half, as was freshman Andreas Kristiansson with 27:12 on the clock.
Following a corner kick by sophomore forward Gavin Sanchez, freshman forward Emmanuel Carrasco had a shot blocked by the outstretched fingers of Dominican senior goalkeeper Gabriel Gongora with 33:23 on the clock.
The Cardinals were again denied in the 37th minute, when Carrasco sent a header high. The attacking onslaught continued two minutes when Sanchez had a shot saved by Gongora.
Unfotunately for the Cardinals, freshman defender Cesar Franco scored for the Stars in the 41st minute, with assists coming from sophomore defender Benji Ibarra and junior defender David Ortega.
Sanchez was again a scoring threat in the second half, but was unfortunately again denied by Gongora in the 61st minute.
Despite the Cardinals best efforts, junior forward Adam Yaghmour extended the Stars lead to 2-0, following an assist from junior midfielder Jonathan Arteza in the 79th minute.
Freshman forward Alexis Flores sent a shot just high of the crossbar in the 85th minute, in a last ditch effort to claw the Cardinals back into the game.
