Sep 21., 2016 – Defeating the fourth-ranked University of Chicago Maroons without several key players proved to be too big of a challenge for the North Central College men's soccer team to overcome, as they were defeated 4-0 on Wednesday night, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
Despite the odds being against them, the Cardinals came out with confidence and came close to being the first team on the scoreboard. With only 2:28 having been played, senior forward John Kissel had a shot saved, while after 6:09 senior defender Jon Borzick had a shot sail just over the top of the crossbar.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it would be the Maroons who would open the scoring, when senior forward Brenton Desai found the back of the net 18:29 into the first half. Freshman forward Alexis Flores looked to level the scores at 24:59, bit his shot missed left.
Chicago would extend their lead under a minute later, when sophomore forward Max Lopez scored on a header, giving the Maroons a 2-0 lead. Six seconds before halftime, senior forward Chris Mathis scored for the Maroons, giving them a 3-0 lead heading into the half.
Coming into the second half with a three-goal deficit, the Cardinals didn't give up and looked to get back into the game thanks to shots from senior midfielder Chandler Olah (52:29), sophomore forward Teddy Trifunovski (57:34) and Olah again (59:15). Olah's first shot was just a fraction high, as was Trifunovski's. Olah's next shot missed to the left, these opportunities gone missing could have seen the Cardinals level the score.
In the 76th minute, freshman midfielder Renato Corghi scored the final goal of the game, securing a 4-0 victory for the Maroons.
The Cardinals will be in action next when they travel to Pella, Iowa to face Central College on Saturday, September 24 at 4:00 P.M. Live in game statistics and video can be accessed by clicking here.
