Press Release
Jan. 31, 2017 – For the second time this season, North Central College senior
Layten Binion was named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday, January 31.
Binion was one of two Cardinals to place for North Central at the Pete Willson Invitational held at Wheaton College on January 27-28.
Binion entered the meet as the two seed at 141 and lived up to his seeding all weekend. He took his first round victory with ease, pinning Adrian College's Kyle Briggs in the first period. Binion then defeated familiar foe Freddy Terranova of Augustana College on a 4-3 decision. He then ended day one with a 7-4 decision over the University of Chicago's Grant Morrison and move onto the semifinals scheduled for day two. Binion came out strong, dominating Sal Corrao of John Carroll University by a 19-0 technical fall. Binion would be matched up against fifth seed and familiar opponent Ronnie Hauser from Elmhurst College in the championship match, taking a 7-3 decision and adding another first place finish to his already impressive résumé.
Binion moves to 26-6 on the season and leads the Cardinals in wins on the season. This is his second honor and the third for North Central as a team.
With just two duals left in the season before the conference championships, the Cardinals travel to Decatur, Ill. on Thursday, February 2 for a dual against Millikin University. The Big Blue are currently 9-8. Start time for the match is slated for 7 pm.
