Cardinals Hold off Vikings in 1-0 Victory

Contact: Ashleigh Jones, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

Oct. 10, 2017- The North Central Women's soccer team held possession of the ball for the majority of its 1-0 victory over the Augustana College Vikings. Though a chilling breeze and steady rain effected play throughout the first half the Cardinals remained focused on obtaining another conference win.

Within the first ten minutes it was back and forth between the Cardinals and the Vikings, yet neither team could seem to score. However, in the seventh minute of the first half Augustana saw an opportunity on goal. Misreading the attack goalkeeper Gretchen Frantz rushed at the Vikings forward, only to let the ball slip just past her finger tips.

Fortunately, defender Alex Piron slid in stopping the ball just before the ball crossed the mouth of the goal resulting in a Vikings corner kick, which was effectively cleared out by the Cardinals' backline.

With the first half of play ending tied at 0, and the rain letting up, North Central continued to control the pace of play, outshooting Augustana 8-5 keeping the Vikings on its heels.

Yet the Vikings would not go away and with about 28 minutes left in the game Augustana was fouled and awarded a penalty kick. Frantz light on her toes anticipated the kick by the Vikings but due to an error in execution the shot went wide leaving Frantz and the Cardinals relieved and ready to answer.

With just 13 minutes left in regulation following the penalty kick, Anna Brodjian broke away from the Augustana midfield and flew past the Viking back line to then boot the ball into the back of Augustana's net.

Suddenly down 1-0, the Vikings take possession and attack aggressively towards the Cardinal's goal. Thanks to the communication between midfielder Catherine Kent and defenders Rachel Kolling and Emily Gaither many of Auguastana's last ditch attempts on goal were stifled quickly.

Finishing the game strong North Central earned its third CCIW play win and will travel to Dubuque, Iowa to play University of Dubuque on October 14 at 3 PM. Follow live stats HERE.
