(WHEATON, Ill.) Oct. 21, 2017 – Facing a strong College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) opponent, the North Central College women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Thunder on Saturday evening at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton.
North Central kept its opponent from scoring in the first half with much of the credit due to goalkeeper
Gretchen Frantz recording three saves on 14 shots. The Thunder's unrelenting offense made it difficult for the Cardinals to get something started on offense, managing four shots in the first 45-minutes from
Anna Brodjian,
Catherine Kent, and
Rachel Kolling.
Wheaton wanted to make sure they had the first shot of the second half and was determined to get on the board. Carney Blake found Isabelle Oliver open at the six, leading to the first score of the game in the 47th minute.
Brodjian made an attempt to respond with a goal of her own, but her shot was blocked by Thunder goalkeeper Kathryn McGregor. This only fueled Wheaton's fire as Oliver responded with a header shot off of a pass from Anna Saunders, sending the ball past Frantz and putting Wheaton ahead 2-0 in the 56th minute.
With a lot of time left in the game, the Cardinals hoped to gather themselves on offense and get on the board, but the Thunder had other plans. Wheaton's defense limited North Central to only three shots following the Thunder's second goal and in the 86th minute, Sarah Van Wingerden connected with Emma Fisler to score the third and final goal of the contest, securing the win for Wheaton.
Kent took the reins in North Central's offensive efforts, taking three shots, followed by Brodjian with two shots and Kolling,
Lexi Dimovski, and
Kyra Ripoli each contributing one.
Frantz recorded six saves to keep the game from getting away from the team while facing 23 shots.
North Central (7-7-1, 3-3 CCIW) travels to North Park University on Wednesday, Oct. 25 with game time set for 5 p.m. A link to live in-game coverage will be available shortly.
