DECATUR, Ill. (Oct. 7, 2017) – Proving why she is the team's leading scorer and a force to be reckoned with on offense,
Lexi Dimovski scored both goals in the North Central College women's soccer team's overtime victory against Millikin University on Saturday at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Ill., helping clinch another crucial College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) win for the Cardinals.
Showing a high intensity offense in the opening minutes of the game, North Central created 16 scoring opportunities while limiting Millikin to zero shots in the first half. With both teams playing strong soccer on both ends of the field, the game would remain scoreless going into halftime.
The Cardinals were not going to let another 45 minutes go by without scoring and Dimovski did her part to make that happen. In the 57th minute, Dimovski found an opening in the Big Blue defense, placing a shot out of reach of Millikin goalkeeper Anna Benvenuto and giving North Central the lead.
Millikin was beginning to feel the effects of North Central's punishing offense, but in the 64th minute, Raven Withaar capitalized on a North Central penalty, sending her shot past
Gretchen Frantz and into the back right corner to tie the game 1-1. It would be the only goal Frantz allowed and extend the game into overtime as time expired in regulation.
With the adrenaline of conference play and the motivation to secure its first overtime victory of the season, North Central did not hesitate in getting something going on offense. Looking to end the game in the 91st minute, Dimovski took a shot, missing wide.
Catherine Kent followed suit less than a minute late, but missed wide as well.
It was Dimovski that would score the game winning goal in the 93rd minute, sending the Cardinals home with a 2-1 win over the Big Blue.
North Central demonstrated its strength on the offensive end, taking 29 shots to the Big Blue's four in 100 minutes played.
Anna Brodjian paced the Cardinal offense with ten shots, six of which were on goal, followed by Dimovski with six and Kent with five.
Defensively, Frantz recorded two saves on eight shots, adding to her 45 saves on the season.
The Cardinals (6-5-1, 2-1 CCIW) are back in action at home on Tuesday, Oct. 10 against Augustana College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and a link to live in-game coverage can be found
