Nov. 11, 2017 – In its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) dual of the 2017-18 season, the North Central College wrestling team put its young talent on display on its home mats, defeating the No. 12 ranked Augustana College Vikings 24-15 on Wednesday evening inside Gregory Arena.
The Cardinals started the night off with a win by forfeit for
Moe Mitchell at 125 pounds and six team points on the board.
Marc Fleenor would add three of his own with a 10-7 win by decision over Josh Diehl at 133.
Augustana made their attempt to keep the gap close with a win by decision at 141 pounds but found themselves still trailing by six going into the next match.
But the Vikings momentum would stop there as North Central won the next three weight classes. At the 149 weight class, No. 7 ranked
Ben Williamson secured a 6-4 win by decision over Daniel Torrez, followed by a 20-5 win by technical fall from freshman
Egan Berta over Mason Heimlich.
Cameron Hayes would also contribute to the winning streak, defeating Nick Torres by a 6-3 decision.
Augustana countered with two wins at 174 and 184, acquiring three points from a win by decision at 174 and six points from a tech. fall at 2:32 by No. 2 ranked Christos Giatras over
Josh Bouie.
The Cardinals were looking to extend their 20-12 lead in the 197 match and
Tyler Vittal made sure of that. Vittal sealed the win for the Cardinals with a 12-3 win by major decision over Trystyn Schoonover, bringing the score to 24-12.
The final match of the nightcap featured
Audel Ochoa and No. 1 ranked Adarios Jones at 285, but Jones' 8-3 win by decision was not enough to put the Vikings ahead.
North Central (2-0, 1-0 CCIW) travel to Mequon, Wis. for the Concordia University Wisconsin Open on Saturday, Nov. 18. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m.
