BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Feb. 25, 2017) - With all three of its individual championships coming from the middle-distance and distance events, the North Central College women's track and field team departed Illinois Wesleyan University's Shirk Center on Saturday with a third-place finish in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Championships.
The Cardinals finished with 107 points. Wheaton College won the meet with 167, while the host Titans scored 120.5.
North Central picked up a win in the meet's first day of competition Friday in the distance medley relay, as
Emily Trent,
Allison Hartman,
Ashley Buado and
Tori Capozziello finished 10 seconds in front of the field in 12 minutes, 37.74 seconds. Capozziello returned to the winner's circle Saturday in the mile run, hitting the line in 5:13.50.
Helen Majer placed third in 5:18.80 and
Madelyn Scopp finished fifth in 5:22.18, as all three recorded personal bests at the distance.
Majer emerged as the CCIW's champion at 3,000 meters, setting another personal record of 10:34.56, and also placed second in Friday's 5,000-meter run (18:38.68). The Cardinals also got second-place finishes from
Kayla Etherton in the 20-pound weight throw (56 feet, 2 1/2 inches) and
Hailey Dammeier in the pentathlon (2,944 points, a personal best and the fourth-highest total in North Central's history).
Sade Gant turned in a third-place showing in the 60-meter dash (7.88), Capozziello and Hartman finished fourth (2:22.79) and fifth (2:23.01), respectively, in the 800-meter run, and
Veronica Ramming cleared 5'1 1/4" in the high jump to place fifth. Hartman and Buado teamed with
Meghan Coggins and
Bethany Bachmann to finish fourth in the 4-by-400-meter relay (4:05.54).
The Cardinals will compete in the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Final Qualifier on Saturday.
