PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (17 Mar. 2017) – Not being fortunate enough to have their offense carry over from the previous day combined with inopportune mistakes in the field, the North Central College baseball team fell by a score of 7-2 to Marietta College on Friday morning at North Charlotte Regional Park.
After trading zeros for the first two innings, Marietta jumped out to a 2-0 lead on one hit and one error in the third inning. Marietta would keep that lead until the sixth when the Cardinals answered with two runs of their own.
Jeremy Quade started the inning off with a single to right and would shortly be on second after
Sing Fong was hit by a pitch.
Michael Mateja picked up right where he left off, driving in Quade with a single to left field. After a sacrifice fly to move Fong to third from
Nick Sotiros, Mateja stole second to avoid the double play opportunity.
Chris Hill then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Fong but caught Mateja at third.
With the momentum shifted the Cardinals way, the score remained the same until the ninth when Marietta took advantage of North Central's mistakes. The Cardinals committed three errors on Marietta's four hits as the Pioneers scored five runs and went on to win 7-2.
North Central (1-1) was outhit 10-6 as the Cardinals threw four pitchers after starter
Evan Blunk threw six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out one. Quade was the only Cardinal with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with one run.
The Cardinals play Denison University at 12 pm (ET) on March 18 in game three of the seven games in Florida.
