PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (17 Mar. 2017) – With their offense erupting for ten hits on the day combined with taking advantage of their opponents mistakes, the North Central College baseball team put a beat down on Ohio Wesleyan University, taking a 12-3 victory to start their spring season.
The Cardinal offense found their groove early, putting up a five run first inning to take the early lead.
Jeremy Quade started things off with a single and advanced to second on a balk.
Sing Fong then reached on an error by the Ohio Wesleyan second baseman before
Michael Mateja collected two RBI's with a bases clearing triple.
Nick Sotiros was then hit by a pitch and
Chris Hill drove in Mateja a batter later.
Colin Weilbacher then drove in Sotiros and
Matt Sutherland capped off the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hill.
The Battling Bishops would answer with one run in the bottom half of the inning and then again in the second inning but the Cardinals would take that run back in the fourth and then increase their lead again with a three-run fifth.
Sam Siebers and
Adam Nelson combined for back to back RBI singles with Siebers coming around to score later in the inning. North Central added another run in the sixth and a two-run homer from Mateja in the seventh gave the Cardinals their largest and final lead, winning 12-3.
Mateja finished 3-for-6 with four RBI's while Quade ended 2-for-5 as the Cardinals outhit the Bishops 10-7. Fong logged his first stolen base of the season while
Nick Anderson picked up the win, allowing five hits and two earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched.
