Rock Island, Ill. (April. 19, 2017) –  In a matchup with College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) power Augustana College, the North Central College women's lacrosse team showed plenty of fight and many positive signs, but ultimately fell 12-8 on Wednesday night, at Thorson-Lucken Field.
Augustana showed why they are perennially the class of the CCIW, as they accounted for three consecutive goals to start the game.
Determined to not let the game slip too far away, a draw control from freshman
Mynk Richardson-Clerk with 12:44 on the clock led to the Cardinals' opening goal, as junior
Emily Zadny evaded a Viking defender on route to scoring.
The Vikings would go on to record another two goals, but it was Zadny again coming up with the much-needed breakthrough, scoring her second goal with 6:33 left in the half, as she found herself on the receiving end of an assist from freshman
Jessica Deetjen. While Augustana responded with another goal of their own, freshman
Nelle Scranton capitalized on a free-position shot with 2:16 remaining in the half. Following a final Viking goal prior to halftime, the Cardinals went into the half trailing 8-3.
North Central wasted no time getting things rolling in the second half, as with 29:18 on the clock junior
Jordyn McFarlane found senior
Madison Maas in scoring position, making it a four-point game with essentially the entire half still to play. Augustana would add another goal, but Maas would strike again, as she was the beneficiary of a Deetjen assist with 21:37 left in the half.
The Cardinals continued to trade goals with the Vikings, as after another goal to Augustana, Deetjen would score a goal of her own, with 15:29 remaining. Augustana answered with two, but Maas kept the game within reach for North Central, scoring with 9:12 on the clock, then finding senior
Kassie Whaling in scoring position with 6:39 remaining.
The final minutes of the game saw North Central give everything, but come up short 12-8. Should the Cardinals meet the Vikings in the CCIW Tournament, it will be an amazing opportunity for the Cardinals as tonight showed they are more than capable of playing with any team in the conference.
Maas and Zadny led the Cardinals with three and two goals respectively, while Deetjen had a team-high two assists. The leader in ground balls was Zadny with five, Richardson-Clerk led the team in draw controls with four.
Deetjen, Richardson-Clerk, senior
Anicia Mattingly, freshman
Paige Nadherny and Freshman
Rebecca Claussen each finished with one caused turnover, while sophomore goalkeeper
Camille Seghesio recorded eight saves.
