Jan. 10, 2018 – Charging back from a nine-point second half deficit, the North Central College basketball team outscored Millikin University by 14 in the fourth quarter, securing a 91-78 victory behind a career-high 36 points from
Mayson Whipple.
Millikin held its largest lead of the contest with 4:14 to play in the third quarter, as the Cardinals stared at a 51-42 deficit, but the offense came alive over the next three minutes as a three-pointer from Whipple sparked a 11-0 run.
Rebekah Foley added a three-point play the old fashion way before Whipple knocked down another long ball, giving North Central a 53-51 advantage.
After a couple ties, Millikin was able to take a 56-55 lead into the fourth quarter, but another North Central run broke open a one-point game to increase the lead back to nine with 5:04 to play in the contest as the Cardinals knocked down four straight three-pointers on consecutive possessions.
Lyndsay Brennan sunk the first, followed by yet another from Whipple, while
Michaela Reedy and
Natali Dimitrova also hit from beyond the arc.
North Central opened up an 11-point lead with 2:31 to play after a pair of free throws from Whipple and led by double figures the rest of the way, scoring a season-high 91 points.
Whipple finished with a career-best 36 points, tied for third on the program's single-game list, shooting 11-of-19 from the field, including five three-pointers and a 9-of-10 showing from the free throw line, while also leading the team with six assists and three steals.
Reedy also finished with a career-high 19 points, tying the program's single-game record shooting 5-of-5 from three-point range, while finished the game 6-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line to go along with a team-leading seven rebounds.
Yanni Saddler paced the Millikin offense with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, while the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin's (CCIW) leading scorer Devin Curry finished with 17 and Emily Schultz added 14 and seven boards.
