ALLENDALE, Mich. (Jan. 13, 2018) – Led by record-breaking performances from veterans and newcomers alike, the North Central College women's track and field team is off and running in the 2018 indoor season after a third-place finish in a 14-team field in Friday's Bob Eubanks Open at Grand Valley State University.
The Cardinals totaled 56 points in the competition, trailing only the NCAA Division II No. 6-ranked hosts (177.75) and Aquinas College (71.75).
North Central saw its varsity record broken in the 600-meter run, as senior Allison Hartman finished second overall and clocked a time of one minute, 37.60 seconds, breaking the previous record of 1:40.16 set by Tori Capozziello '17 in the same meet a year ago. Newcomer Kelsey McLaurin, meanwhile, opened her collegiate career by winning the triple jump competition with a distance of 37 feet, 4.50 inches, which not only sets a new Cardinal freshman record, but ranks her second in North Central history in the event indoors.
Hartman and McLaurin later teamed with Ashley Buado and Lizzy McCadd to place third in the 4-by-400-meter relay (4:04.88). Madelyn Scopp and Dianne Barajas placed third (5:12.71) and fourth (5:12.73), respectively, in the mile run, and Barajas also added a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time (10:28.39) which ranks ninth all-time for the Cardinals. North Central got two other top-five finishes in the 600 as Kyle Draghi placed fourth (1:41.29) and Buado placed fifth (1:41.65).
North Central hosts the Cardinal Opener on Friday at Al B. Carius Track. Competition is scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m.
