Jan. 27, 2018 (BLOOMINGTON, ILL.)- The North Central College Cardinals men's and women's swimming and diving team earned second-place after facing tough competition in its triangular meet in Bloomington, Ill. against the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans and Millikin University Big Blue on Friday, January 26.
The women's swimming and diving program sought out two more opponent wins to extend its opponent win streak to seven but fell short against the Titans, despite five first-place finishes.
The Cardinals edged out the Titans in the opening 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.72. The relay team consisted of
Katherine Canfield,
Marissa Hoppe,
Beth Ryan and
Amy Feltz.
Soon after Ryan took first-place in the 50-yard freestyle (25.93) and second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.84.
Canfield earned two first-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.37) and in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.51.
Danai Stylianou earned third-place in the 100-yard butterfly finishing with a time of 1:06.86, just two seconds behind the second-place finisher.
Hoppe snatched the first-place finish in 100-yard breaststroke from Illinois Wesleyan's Lisa Cheng with a time of 1:12.86, reaching the wall just hundredths of a second faster than her opponent.
Prior to Sam Kruzel's strong second- place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, with a time of 11:46.34, North Central swept the 200-yard Freestyle Relay.
The team of Kruzel, Canfield, Feltz and Ryan took first-place (1:45.74), followed by Stylianou,
Emily Vargo,
Emily Manikas, and
Naomi Hill for second (2:01.21), and closing out Millikin from the top three was Hoppe,
Hannah Downing,
Jennifer Hufnagle, and
Alice Zordan (2:10.37).

The men's swimming team started the meet with confidence finishing second and third-place in the 200-yard medley relay.
The relay team of
Austin Blaser,
Nick Mielke,
Ryan Lewellyan and
Cameron Teel finished with a time of 1:49.30. While Sam Lee,
Luke Gentile,
Ian Greenway and
Gage Eisenbeis took third with a time of 1:53.32.
Blaser continued to find success in a closely contested 50-yard free style (23.60) and in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.33) where he earned third place in both.
Though the men's swimming and diving team struggled to break past Illinois Wesleyans' swimmers in many of the individual heats the Cardinals still found itself in the top three in a couple of their stronger events.
Such events included the 200-yard individual medley which Mielke swam it in 2:05.61, less than 33 hundredths of a second after the first-place finisher.
Gentile and Teel took third-place in the 100-yard freestyle (56.09) and 500-yard freestyle (5:37.81) respectively.
In closing out the meet for North Central the men's swimming and diving team earned second and third-place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Blaser, Gentile, Teel, and Mielke came in second with a time of 1:36.58. Who were followed by teammates Lewellyan, Greenway, Eisenbeis, and Lee with a time of 1:43.35 to earn third-place.
