Jan. 31, 2018 – In a contest in which the North Central College women's basketball team led for over three quarters of the game, the Cardinals let one slip away in the final minute, falling 60-55 at the hands of Carroll University on Wednesday night inside Gregory Arena.
In a tight first quarter,
Michaela Reedy broke open a one-point game with a three-pointer, while
Lyndsay Brennan hit one of two free throws right before the end of the quarter to give North Central a 17-12 lead.
Haydn Braun opened the second quarter by knocking down a jumper to give North Central its largest lead of the first half, but the Pioneers were able to trim the lead to four, 30-26 heading into halftime.
A layup from
Natali Dimitrova and a three-pointer off the hand of
Maya Walls increased the Cardinal lead 35-26 with, the largest lead of the contest for either team, but once again the Pioneers came clawing back to knot the game 39-39 with under three minutes to play in the quarter.
After taking a one-point advantage into the final quarter of play, a long ball from Brennan and a layup from Walls increased the lead back to five with 7:43 remaining.
North Central held onto that five-point lead with 2:55 remaining, but that was all the Cardinal offense could muster, closing the game 0-for-4 from the field while Carroll rattled off 10 straight points to overtake the lead in the final minute.
Carroll (6-13, 3-7 CCIW) led for just over two minutes of the contest and were led in scoring by Brittany Wald's 23-point, 12-rebound double-double. Rachel Van Sluys also finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points while grabbing 10 boards.
Walls led the Cardinal offense with 10 points, while Reedy added nine. Brennan led the Cardinals with nine rebounds and six assists, while Braun added eight points.
North Central (4-16, 2-9 CCIW) returns home on Saturday, Feb. 3, celebrating Senior Day prior to the matchup with North Park University scheduled for 5 p.m. Links to live in-game coverage are available
