ELMHURST, Ill. (Oct. 2, 2018) – After a nine-day break in between matches, the North Central College women's volleyball team could not shake off the rust in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) match on Tuesday at Elmhurst College, suffering a 3-0 defeat at R.A. Faganel Hall.
North Central (2-13, 0-2 CCIW) hit just .048 over the match to Elmhurst's .225, finishing with 27 kills to 22 errors, while the Bluejays committed 15 errors while tallying 38 kills on the evening.
The turning point of the opening set came with the score knotted 9-9, as a Bluejay service ace and consecutive Cardinal attack errors led to a quick three points for Elmhurst, forcing a North Central timeout.
Elmhurst (9-9, 2-2 CCIW) capped a five-point run with a kill out of the timeout to take a 13-9 lead and never surrendered the lead the rest of the set en route to a 25-20 defeat for North Central.
15 of the Cardinals' 27 kills came in the first set, as the offense mustered just six kills in each of the final two sets, while committing a combined 16 errors to fall 25-18 and 25-16 in the second and third sets, respectively.
Kaitlyn Boelter-Eberhardt led all players with 14 kills, while no other Cardinal tallied more than five.
Maya Bryant finished with 20 assists, while
Katelynn Kuehl added 15 digs on defense and
Kimberly Epker finished with a match-high five total blocks.
Four Bluejays finished with six or more kills on the night, led by eight from Taylor Zurliene and seven from Kayla Mast. Kelly Townsend dished out 16 assists and 10 digs, while Valerie Thomas added 11 digs.
North Central continues CCIW play on Saturday, Oct. 6, making the trip to Carroll University with the match scheduled for 1 p.m. at Van Male Fieldhouse. Links to live in-game coverage are available
