WILMINGTON, Ohio (Nov. 24, 2018) – The North Central College women's basketball team dropped its second straight contest on the young season in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday in the opening game of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament, spoiling a 15-point fourth-quarter lead to fall 74-70 to host Wilmington College.
North Central (1-2) led for over 37 minutes of the contest, including a 15-point lead with under eight minutes to go in the contest, but ended the game on the wrong end of a 29-13 run as Wilmington caught fire to the tune of 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the final quarter.
The Cardinals were clicking on both ends of the ball in the first half, shooting 7-of-12 from three-point range while committing just two turnovers and forcing 10 on the defensive end to take a 41-31 lead into the intermission.
Opening up the lead even further in the third quarter, a three-pointer from
Natali Dimitrova gave the Cardinals a 13-point lead with 3:56 to play, before
Maya Walls connected from deep just before the end of the quarter to increase the lead 55-40.
The two teams traded baskets to start the final quarter when things fell apart for North Central, serving over six turnovers in the final nine minutes while shooting just 4-of-14 during that stretch.
Wilmington (2-1) finally overtook the Cardinal lead on a Kennedy Lewis layup with :40 to play in the contest and proceeded to knock down six of eight free throws down the stretch to steal away the win from North Central.
Five Cardinals finished in double figures, led by 12 points from
Lyndsay Brennan, while Walls and
Hannah Vitkus each finished with 11. Vitkus also led the team with seven rebounds, while
Allison Pearson and
Alanna Newsome each added 10 points, and
Tyonne Howard dished out a game-high eight assists.
Kelly Noll paced the Quaker offense with 17 points, while Faith Teaford added a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. Lewis and Hannah Brinkley also finished in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
