Mielke, Hoerstel Shine at Illinois College Quad

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (Dec. 8, 2018) – Taking to the waters at the annual Illinois College Quad, the North Central College men's swimming & diving team turned in an abundance of strong performances including four first-place finishes Saturday. 

The Cardinals proved they were ready to compete from the sound of the first gun, earning the top spot in the 200-yard medley relay as the team of Sam Lee, Ferdinand Hoerstel, Nick Mielke and Austin Blaser finished in a time of 1:45.52. A few events later, North Central claimed four of the top-five spots in the 50-yard backstroke, with Mielke's personal best time of 27.38 earning him second. Behind him, Lee took third (28.29), Ryan Lewellyan took fourth (28.60) and Blaser rounded out the group in fifth (29.85).

Keeping the momentum going, the Cardinals got a 1-2 finish from Hoerstal (29.09) and Sarantis Stamatis (32.97) in the 50-yard breaststroke. The pair led the way in the 100-yard breaststroke as well, with Hoerstel (1:03.43) cruising to a six-second victory, while Stamatis turned in a personal best to finish third (1:09.78). Finishing fifth, Michael Davis also earned a personal best (1:20.16). In the 100-yard individual medley, Mielke earned a first-place finish with a time of 56.37, while Lewellyan took third, establishing a new personal best of 1:04.28.

Adding to  their success in the short sprints, the Cardinals landed three swimmers in the top five spots: Blaser in second (25.86), Luke Gentile in fourth (27.89), and Lee in fifth (28.61). Meanwhile, Thomas Wagner took second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:13.87) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:24.08). Also finishing third was Gentile in the 100-yard freestyle (56.48).

The meet's final event saw the Cardinals team of Hoerstel, Mielke, Stamatis and Blaser narrowly edged out in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
