Mar. 25, 2018 -Â In a contest which saw more than 70 fouls called between the two teams, the North Central College women's lacrosse team took Albion College's best shots on Sunday and outlasted the Britons, 14-11, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium to improve to 5-0 in home games this season.
The Cardinals (7-1) enjoyed a run of strong play late in the first half to pull ahead, then scored three straight times in a two-minute stretch midway through the second half to turn away Albion's comeback effort.
The Britons opened the scoring just 12 seconds after play began, as Jade Barrett connected shortly after the opening draw. Four minutes later, North Central's
Addie Records found some space behind the Albion defense and evened the score with a goal off a pass from Mynk Richardson-Clerk. The hosts followed with goals from
Jessica Deetjen and
Christina Truver just 12 seconds apart, and
Annabelle Steiner's free-position goal at the 21:16 mark put the Cardinals in front, 5-1.
Albion (4-3) followed with a four-goal surge of its own to take the lead once again with 12:13 to play in the half. Truver tied the score with a free-position goal with 11:26 to play, then took the lead on Deetjen's second goal before Truver scored again with 10:24 on the clock. The Britons slowed the rally with a goal from Shannon Kahl, but were held scoreless the rest of the period while North Central extended its lead to 9-6 with goals from Richardson-Clerk and Records.
Two straight free-position goals by Cait Gaitley enabled Albion to close its deficit to 10-9 with 14:05 remaining in the game, but Richardson-Clerk and Steiner connected on free-position shots and
Nelle Scranton scored on a pass from Deetjen to preserve the Cardinals' lead.
Records, Truver and Steiner each scored three goals for North Central. Truver also claimed four ground balls and four caused turnovers as well as seven of the team's 15 draw controls. The Cardinals controlled 11 of the final 14 draws of the game.
Camille Seghesio saved a career-high 11 shots on goal.
North Central travels to Beloit College (Wisconsin) on Wednesday. Play at Strong Stadium is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
