AURORA, Ill. (Sept. 1, 2018) –
Moved indoors to Vaughan Tennis Center due to morning storms, the North Central College women's tennis team opened the 2018-19 season with a bang, scoring a pair of 9-0 wins over Central College and Aurora University on Saturday.

The Cardinals (2-0) opened the morning with a 3-0 doubles sweep over Central (Iowa) (1-1), as Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay teamed up to score a 8-1 victory over Laurynn Mize and Maddie Hartley at the No. 1 position.

Diana Barcelata and Morgan House then made quick work of Madison Krumm and Sami Thompson by a 8-1 score at No. 2, while Katie McGraw and Tiffany Smolik took down Kirsten Jordan and Cassidy Bos, 8-2 at No. 3.

In singles play, the Cardinals went on to win all six matches in straight sets, as Barcelata set the tone with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Mize, while Kanthaphixay sealed the match victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Krumm at No. 3.

For good measure, Hougland took care of Jordan, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot, before Smolik was victorious over Bos, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.  At the No. 4 position, House defeated Thompson, 6-1, 7-5, while McGraw clinched the shutout with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hartley at No. 5.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals dominated doubles play over Aurora (0-2), as Hougland and Kanthaphixay shut out Giselle Salazar and Sami Hultine, 8-0 at the No. 1 position.  The Cardinal duo of McGraw and Smolik also shut out Alexis Marcy and Leilah Dudziak, 8-0 at No. 3, while Barcelata and House made it a clean sweep with a 8-1 win over Teryn Griffin and Sarah Love at the No. 2 position.

Carrying that momentum into singles play, Reagan Scherpe won by default at No. 6, before Kanthaphixay once again sealed the match win in straight 6-0 sets over Hultine at the No. 3 spot.

Barcelata then took care of business at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Love, while McGraw shut out Marcy, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.  At the No. 1 position, Hougland made quick work of Salazar, 6-0, 6-0, while Katie Legorreta closed out play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dudziak at No. 5.
