AURORA, Ill. (Sept. 1, 2018) – Moved indoors to Vaughan Tennis Center due to morning storms, the North Central College women's tennis team opened the 2018-19 season with a bang, scoring a pair of 9-0 wins over Central College and Aurora University on Saturday.
The Cardinals (2-0) opened the morning with a 3-0 doubles sweep over Central (Iowa) (1-1), as
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay teamed up to score a 8-1 victory over Laurynn Mize and Maddie Hartley at the No. 1 position.
Diana Barcelata and
Morgan House then made quick work of Madison Krumm and Sami Thompson by a 8-1 score at No. 2, while
Katie McGraw and
Tiffany Smolik took down Kirsten Jordan and Cassidy Bos, 8-2 at No. 3.
In singles play, the Cardinals went on to win all six matches in straight sets, as Barcelata set the tone with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Mize, while Kanthaphixay sealed the match victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Krumm at No. 3.
For good measure, Hougland took care of Jordan, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot, before Smolik was victorious over Bos, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. At the No. 4 position, House defeated Thompson, 6-1, 7-5, while McGraw clinched the shutout with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hartley at No. 5.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals dominated doubles play over Aurora (0-2), as Hougland and Kanthaphixay shut out Giselle Salazar and Sami Hultine, 8-0 at the No. 1 position. The Cardinal duo of McGraw and Smolik also shut out Alexis Marcy and Leilah Dudziak, 8-0 at No. 3, while Barcelata and House made it a clean sweep with a 8-1 win over Teryn Griffin and Sarah Love at the No. 2 position.
Carrying that momentum into singles play,
Reagan Scherpe won by default at No. 6, before Kanthaphixay once again sealed the match win in straight 6-0 sets over Hultine at the No. 3 spot.
Barcelata then took care of business at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Love, while McGraw shut out Marcy, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. At the No. 1 position, Hougland made quick work of Salazar, 6-0, 6-0, while
Katie Legorreta closed out play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dudziak at No. 5.
North Central returns to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 5, beginning College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play at Augustana College with matches slated for 3:30 p.m.
