ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Sept. 5, 2018) – Beginning College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Wednesday, the North Central College women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season, falling 7-2 at the hands of Augustana College.
The Cardinals (2-1) found themselves in a 3-0 hole after doubles play, as
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay narrowly pulled off the victory at the No. 1 position, but ultimately could not hang on, falling 9-7 to Caitlyn Schaffer and Madeline Lombardi.
North Central fought to keep the match alive in singles play, as Hougland took down Annie Timm, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 position, while
Diana Barcelata came back from dropping the first set 6-3, to complete the comeback win over Schaffer, 7-5, 6-4.
The depth of the Vikings (1-0) proved too much in the end however, as Augustana went on to win the last four singles positions in straight sets to seal the 7-2 win.
North Central continues CCIW play on Friday, Sept. 7, traveling to Millikin University with matches scheduled for 3 p.m. at Fairview Park Tennis Complex.
