Sept. 12, 2018 – Playing in their fourth College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) match in the last eight days, the North Central College women's tennis team improved to 3-1 over that span with a 7-2 victory over Elmhurst College on Wednesday at the NCC Tennis Courts.
The Cardinals (5-1, 3-1 CCIW) turned in a clean sweep of doubles play to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the match, powered by a 8-2 win for the duo of
Katie McGraw and
Tiffany Smolik at the No. 3 position, taking down Maddy Freeman and Pamela Kobeszko.
At No. 2 doubles,
Diana Barcelata and
Morgan House came away with a 8-5 victory over Rachel Rettger and Sarah Paist, while
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay teamed up to defeat Chiara Gaudio and Ysabel Gonzaga by an identical 8-5 score at the No. 1 spot.
Carrying the 3-0 lead into singles play, Barcelata drew the Cardinals one match closer to victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gaudio at No. 1, ahead of Kanthaphixay sealed the match win with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Gonzaga at No. 3.
Continuing the wining spree, Hougland made quick work of Rettger in straight 6-1 sets at No. 2, while McGraw closed with a hard fought 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 win over Paist at the No. 5 position.
North Central continues the stretch of five-straight CCIW matches on Tuesday, Sept. 18, traveling to Carroll University, with matches slated for 3:30 p.m. at the Jean Kilgour-Trailblazer Tennis Complex in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
