EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Sept. 15, 2018) – The North Central College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of tough matches on Saturday in the final day of the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament, falling by 3-0 scores to each of Concordia College (Minnesota) and Augsburg University.
The Cardinals (1-9) found themselves on the wrong end of a hard fought opening match against Concordia College (Minnesota), with the score knotted 22-22 late, a pair of unforced Cardinal errors allowed Concordia to score the final three points of the set and steal away a 25-22 win.
The final two sets also came down to the wire, as the second set was knotted at 23 late, but a Cardinal service error ended the set 25-23 in favor of the Cobbers (5-8).
Set three went to extra points, but once again the Cardinals could not pull off the victory, as Concordia closed out the set with the final two points to clinch the match with a 29-27 third set win.
North Central actually finished the match with a 42-35 advantage in kills, but committed just as many errors as the Cobbers, while 13 service errors ended up haunting the Cardinals in the end.
Kaitlyn Boelter-Eberhardt paced the Cardinal offense with a career-high 18 kills, while
Reagan Raymer added nine.
Kiarah Horn led the team with 23 assists, while Raymer led the defense with 15 digs and
Kaylee Allensworth added 11.
In the nightcap against Augsburg, the two teams traded leads the whole first set, until Augsburg (10-2) broke a 24-24 tie with a kill before finishing off the set with a service ace to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Cardinal offense struggled to gain any momentum in the second set, committing 10 attack errors to just eight kills, hitting -.057 to drop the set 25-20.
Forced to call a timeout after trailing 18-11 in the third set, the Cardinal offense caught fire to score to score eight of the next 10 points, as two service aces from Allensworth and a pair of kills from Boelter-Eberhardt drew North Central to within one point of the lead, 20-19.
The Augsburg offense was not to be denied however, scoring five of the final seven points of the third set to close out the set 25-21 and clinch the 3-0 match victory.
Boelter-Eberhardt and
Sarah Geosling each recorded nine kills to lead the offense, while Horn handed out 25 assists. On defense, Allensworth dug 14 balls, while Boelter-Eberhardt added 10.
