NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 3, 2018) - The North Central College men's soccer team won their first game of the 2018 season in dominating fashion, shutting out the Westminster College Blue Jays, 2-0.
The Cardinals controlled the ball for most of the game, giving the Blue Jays little opportunity to infiltrate the box and score. Junior goalie
Marco Soto saved the only shot on goal for the Blue Jays, while his defensive teammates held Westminster to just three shots overall. For Soto, it was his first shutout of the season and of his career.
On the other side of the field, sophomore
Austin Lombardi put the first goal of the season on the board for the Cardinals, scoring in the 16
th minute of the game. Sophomore
Ryan Powers saved a ball that was destined to be a goal kick to junior
Andreas Kristiansson, who then passed to Lombardi, who got it just passed the outreached hands of Westminster's goalie into the net.
The game was quiet of scoring for 54 minutes before senior
Joe Trocki found the net again for the Cardinals, with juniors
Steven Abalos and
Scott McGuane on the assist.
In a game littered with yellow cards, North Central was able to come out on top to start their season, after two previous games had been postponed due to weather. The Cardinals look to keep the positive momentum going as they travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on Carleton College on Sept. 7. The live stats for that game as well as the live video can be found
