CHICAGO, Ill. (Sept. 30, 2018) - Taking a break from their conference schedule, the North Central College men's soccer team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to beat Illinois Institute of Technology 2-1 in overtime.
The Scarlet Hawks (4-6-0) put themselves on the board in the first half, with a goal from Manuel Lopez, tapping the ball in during a scrum in front of the net. The Cardinals were not able to respond, despite having double to amount of shots in the first half.
The game proved to be a stalemate for quite some time in the second half, with no scoring until junior
Alexis Flores got the opportunity to shoot a penalty kick, burying the shot in the back of the net in the 88
th minute of the game. With the scored tied at the end of regulation, the game would have to be settled in overtime.
Flores struck again in overtime, taking a ball assisted by
Gavin Sanchez and
Jared Collier and scoring only 43 seconds into the overtime period.
The Cardinals were able to get off 31 shots in the game, with 18 of them on goal, while the Scarlet Hawks shot 10 times with five of them on goal. For Flores, he scored his sixth and seventh goal on the season, which leads the team. Collier added his second assist on the season and Sanchez, his third.
Marco Soto saved four shots for the Cardinals, bringing his season total to 29.
The Cardinals (6-3-0, 1-1 CCIW) are on the road again on Oct. 3, going to Bloomington, Ill. to take on the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans. Game time is set to start at 7 pm.
