DUBUQUE, Iowa (Sept. 8, 2018) – On day two of the Loras College Invite, the North Central College women's volleyball team found itself on the wrong end of a pair of 3-0 matches, falling to Dubuque University in the opener, before suffering a defeat at the hands of the host Duhawks in the afternoon.
In the opener, the Cardinals (1-6) seemed to have the first set in control, holding a 23-20 lead late, but the Spartans rallied to close the set scoring the final five points, including three kills from Kara Wright to steal away the set 25-23.
The offense then struggled in the second set, hitting -.049, committing 10 attack errors en route to a 25-16 defeat.
The third set did not prove much better for the Cardinal offense, falling 25-17, finishing with eight kills to six errors to hit .056 while recording just one service ace the entire match.
Wright finished with a match-high 22 kills for Dubuque, hitting .391 on the match, while
Claire Vrabec,
Kaylee Allensworth and
Anna Billman each recorded five kills to lead the Cardinals.
The offensive struggles carried over into the second match of the day against host Loras, committing nine attack errors to nine kills, falling 25-14.
The second set proved difficult for the Cardinals as well, dropping the set 25-15, but North Central battled tough in the third set, as a
Sarah Geosling kills evened the score 23-23 late. That proved to be as close as the Cardinals would come however, as back-to-back kills from Kayla Kinney ended the set 25-23 in favor of the Duhawks.
Kaitlyn Boelter-Eberhardt led North Central with seven kills in the nightcap, while
Kiarah Horn led the team with 15 assists.
North Central returns to play on Friday, Sept. 14 at the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, taking on Lakeland University at 5 p.m. at the McPhee Center.
