WHEATON, Ill. (Oct. 8, 2019) – Closing out the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) regular season schedule, the North Central College women's tennis team was unable to upend unbeaten Wheaton College on Tuesday, falling by a 8-1 score at the Wheaton Tennis Courts.
The Thunder (10-0, 7-0 CCIW) took a 3-0 lead after a clean sweep of doubles play, as
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay suffered their first loss in conference play 8-5 at the hands of Claire Browning and Abygale Ann at the No. 1 position.
At the No. 3 position,
Ellie Gallagher and
Yaitova Spiegel found themselves on the wrong end of a tough 8-7 defeat, as the Thunder's Emme Lindquist and Bethany Hoogerheide completed the doubles sweep.
Wheaton wasted no time in clinching the match victory with a pair of straight-set wins at No. 6 and No. 4 to begin singles play and went on to claim five of the six positions.
Hougland proved to be the lone bright spot on the day, improving to 7-1 at the No. 1 position in conference play, scoring a 6-1, 6-1 win over Browning atop the lineup.
North Central (8-2, 6-2 CCIW) finishes the CCIW regular season in third place in the standings, tying the 2009-10 team for the highest finish in program history.
The Cardinals will close out the fall portion of the season at the CCIW Championships beginning on Thursday, Oct. 17, held at Centre Court Racquet Club in Hanover Park, Illinois.
