Final Brackets

HANOVER PARK, Ill. (Oct. 19, 2019) – The North Central College women's tennis team finished fourth at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships over the weekend at Centre Court Athletic Club, locking up the final spot in the CCIW Automatic Qualifier Tournament in the spring.

Combining the points earned in the regular season standings and the placement of this weekend's tournament, the Cardinals finished with 19 total points to finish in fourth-place.  Wheaton College was crowned champion after earning 26 points, followed closely by Augustana College with 25 points, while Carthage College narrowly edged out North Central with 20 total points.

Highlighting the championships was the No. 1 doubles team of Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay.  The pair opened with a 8-3 victory over North Park University's Linn Viuhkonen and Patrycja Miazek.

The duo followed with a 8-2 drubbing of Carthage's Giana Apostoli and Jen Ptak to advance to Saturday's championship, but the pair met their match in Augustana's Annie Timm and Zeana Badawi, falling in a tightly contested 8-6 battle.

Also placing in doubles play, Ellie Gallagher and Yaitova Spiegel turned in a third-place performance at the No. 3 position, scoring a 8-5 win over Katie Cooper and Alena Hinch of Millikin University.

The Cardinals had a rough go of it in singles play, as Kanthaphixay was the lone individual to place in the top-three of their respective flight, finishing third at No. 2.  Kanthaphixay opened play with a straight 6-0 sweep of Illinois Wesleyan University's Alessia Girardin.

In round two, Kanthaphixay suffered a 6-4, 7-5 loss to eventual champion Badawi of Augustana, but rebounded with a 8-0 shutout of Carroll University's Maya Gaedtke in the playback bracket.  In the third-place match, Kanthaphixay was again no match for Girardin, scoring a 8-1 win to close out her tournament.

With the CCIW Championships marking the end of the fall season, North Central returns to action in the spring with their annual spring break trip to Orlando, Florida, beginning play on Sunday, Mar. 1 against Oglethorpe University.  The rest of the spring schedule is available HERE.
