JACKSONSVILLE, Ill. (Nov. 2, 2019) – Traveling to MacMurray College to kick off its season, the North Central College men's wrestling team compiled six first-place finishes—including four by freshmen—at the Dr. Bob Kellogg Open on Saturday inside Bill Wall Gymnasium.
The Cardinals dominated the 125-pound weight class, which saw freshman
Robert Precin top teammate top
Enzo Silva in the championship match by a 7-1 decision. Precin's path to the championship saw him record a major decision (11-2) in the quarterfinals and pin over teammate
Shuji Mizoguchi, while Silvia pinned
Miles Trahey in the semifinals.
North Central also found a 1-2 finish at the 133 pounds, where
Ian Mullen rode a quarterfinal-bye, a pin and a 4-3 decision into the championship, where he bested
Eric Davis-Smith by sudden victory. Davis-Smith tallied an 11-1 major decision in the quarterfinals and defeated Nicholas Rink in the semifinals.
Freshman
Cole Cervantes added a first-place finish for the Cardinals. The freshman tallied three pins to win the 157-pound bracket in times of 4:50, 2:28 and 6:33, respectively.
Jacob Boumans, another Cardinals wrestling in his first meet, cruised to victory at 165. After a bye in the quarterfinals, he marched into the championship with a 5:00 minute pin the semifinals, winning by an 11-2 major decision over
Marcello Macellaio, who won a 5-0 decision in his semifinal.
Brock Montford owned the North Central freshman squad's final victory of the day with a pin in round one (2:48) followed by a 17-3 major decision to top the field at 174. Rounding out North Central's first-place finishers,
Jason Nako (197) won by virtue of 7-2 and 4-3 decisions.
Vincent Rink finished second at 141 pounds, receiving a 9-7 decision in the quarterfinals and then pinning his opponent in the semifinals, before getting pinned himself in the championship round. Also finishing second was
Aaron Helbok, who won a 14-0 major decision in the 184-pound semifinal, and
George Marre, who rallied after dropping his round one match with a pair of pins.
Isaac Martinez battled his way to a third-place finish in the consolation of the 141-pound bracket, earning a pair of major decisions on the day.
North Central returns home on Nov. 5, playing host to MacMurray College. Competition inside Gregory Arena is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
