NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Feb. 27, 2019) - Despite temperatures dipping below 20 degrees, the North Central College women's lacrosse team overcame the elements and the competition on Wednesday in their season opener, taking the game against St. Mary's College (Ind.) by an 8-7 final.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the first half, scoring two goals to open up play.
Nelle Scranton started the scoring off an assist by Reilly Pfieffer, with
Christina Truver adding on just two minutes later to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
The Belles struck back though, with Erin Doyle scoring twice in the next two minutes to even score, both off assists from Kate Kelly. Pfieffer then took a pass from
Grace Steiner and found the back of the net to make the score 3-2. Truver struck again shortly after, with a goal off an assist from Scranton.
The back and forth game continued with St. Mary's scoring two more goals to even the contest at four. North Central was able to pull away again before halftime with two more goals, this time from the likes of
Berit Vandenbroucke and
Jessica Deetjen.
The bitter cold took its toll on the offenses in the second half, with only three more goals scored after the break. An early second half goal was scored by the Belles before they tied it again with 11 minutes left in regulation. The Cardinals would not let their opponent take the lead though, with
Madeline McHugh and
Grace Steiner adding goals to make it an 8-6 game. Kate Kelly got the Belles within striking distance with four minutes remaining with another goal.
As time wound down, the Cardinals fended off a furious attack from St. Mary's to claim their first victory of the season.
Camille Seghesio saved 12 shots that came her way, only allowing seven goals throughout the contest for the Cardinals.Truver picked up where she left off last season, leading the team in goals for the game with two.
