PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (Mar. 14, 2019) - Showing no ill effects from the trip south, the North Central College baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season Thursday, dispatching of the State University of New York at Canton, 12-2, in its opening game of the Snowbird Classic at North Charlotte Regional Park.
The Cardinals seized control early by crossing the plate eight times in the first two innings and its batters showed superior discipline all afternoon long, drawing 10 walks while not striking out once in the contest.
Rob Marinec opened the scoring by belting a run-scoring double in the first inning to score
Jeremy Quade. After
John Carmody fouled off five straight pitches to work an 11-pitch walk,
Colin Weilbacher came through with a two-run double, and
Joe Rizzo delivered a two-out RBI single to stake North Central to a 4-0 lead after just one inning of play.
Quade drew a second straight walk and stole second base before scoring on an error in the second inning. Carmody followed by smacking a two-run home run, his first of the season, and Rizzo drove in another run with a two-out single to double the Cardinals' advantage to 8-0.
Weilbacher and Carmody both scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, and
Matt Sutherland scored on a fielder's choice in the seventh before pinch hitter
Johnny Auge drove in a run with a base hit in the eighth.
Austin Polezoes pitched five scoreless innings, scattering four hits while striking out four, to improve to 2-0 on the season. Weilbacher went 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored, while Rizzo went 3 for 5 and Quade drew a team-high three walks.
The Cardinals take on Vassar College (New York) on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Eastern time.
