PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (Mar. 16, 2019) - Executing a late-inning rally for the second straight day, the North Central College baseball team improved to 6-0 on Saturday by claiming a 5-3 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University at North Charlotte Regional Park.
Trailing, 3-2, with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Cardinals tied the contest when
Colin Weilbacher's base hit scored
Rob Marinec, who had reached base with a walk.
Eric Outlaw was then hit by a pitch, and Outlaw and Weilbacher both advanced on a passed ball and
Joe Rizzo was walked to load the bases. Pinch hitter
Justin Rios, credited with the save on the pitcher's mound in Friday's win over Vassar College, then came through with a two-run single to complete the comeback.
Weilbacher drove in North Central's first run of the day, as his first-inning single plated
Jeremy Quade. Marinec produced an RBI single in the third inning, once again scoring Quade, who led off the inning with a double.
Marinec finished the day 2 for 2 with a pair of walks, while Weilbacher and
Declan Smyth each went 2 for 4.
Blake Kons pitched the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs, while
John Clifford pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings and was credited with the win.
Tyler Jones closed out the ninth inning to pick up a save.
The Cardinals take on No. 22-ranked Babson College (Massachusetts) on Sunday. Play is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time.
