Women's Tennis Goes 2-0 Against Gophers, Falcons

ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 18, 2019) – The North Central College women's tennis team scored a pair of wins on Monday, first with a 9-0 sweep of Goucher College in the morning before taking a 6-3 victory against Concordia University (Wis.) in the evening at Sanlando Park.

Against Goucher (3-3), No. 2 doubles pair Diana Barcelata and Katie McGraw defeated Tes DeJaeger and Ali Gorson-Morrow 8-1 and set up wins at No. 3 from Morgan House and Tiffany Smolik and Hannah Houghland and Alaina Kanthaphixay at No. 1. The momentum continued into singles play as the Gophers could not manage a win with Smolik getting things started with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 against Meera Balasubramanian and House rallying back at No. 5 from a 3-6 loss in the first set to win the next two 6-0, 10-2 against Kyoko Kinoshita. The rest was smoothing sailing for the Cardinals, sweeping the No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 matches.

In the evening, North Central came out ahead with a 2-0 lead over Concordia (10-3) after Barcelata and MgGraw recorded their second win of the day at No. 2 doubles, defeating Ricki Budewiz and Bailey Kelly, 8-3. Houghland and Kanthaphixay also enjoyed a win at No. 1 doubles, winning their match 8-2. Emma Sievers and Elizabeth Johnson added a win for the Falcons at No. 3, but the Cardinals rattled off three straight wins from Smolik at No. 6 singles, Kanthaphixay at No. 3 and Houghland at No. 2. Concordia won the No. 4 match, but a win from Barcelata sealed the team victory for North Central.

North Central (12-4) looks to remain undefeated in Orlando with their final match slated for Wednesday, Mar. 20 against Hope College. Match time is set for 10 a.m. (ET).
