AURORA, Ill. (Mar. 2, 2019) – Hosting their final match before heading to Florida for spring break, the North Central College men's tennis team saw their eight-match win streak come to an end on Saturday against NCAA Division I opponent Eastern Illinois University, falling 7-0 at Vaughan Tennis Center.
Beginning the afternoon with doubles play, the Panthers (8-8) scored 6-2 wins at each of the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to take the one singles point after doubles play per Division I rules.
Eastern Illinois opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4, before taking a 3-0 match lead with a 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.
Victor Krueger hung in with Freddie O'Brien at the No. 1 position, almost pulling off the first-set upset but eventually fell 7-5, 6-1 as the Panthers sealed the match win with the victory.
Justin Howes also put up a nice fight, challenging Gage Kingsmith at the No. 3 spot, narrowly dropping the opening set 7-6 before suffering a 6-4 defeat in the second.
North Central (8-2) opens their spring trip on Friday, Mar. 15, taking on Ursinus College (Pennsylvania) at 12:30 p.m. (ET) at Sanlando Park in Orlando, Florida.
