ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 20, 2019) – The North Central College men's tennis team will leave Orlando on a high note after defeating the Calvin College Knights (5-3) by a score of 5-4 in a match that came down to the wire to determine a winner.
The Knights jumped ahead early with a 2-0 lead in doubles play before
Andy Hinch and
Tyler Haizel defeated Jason Wolters and Owen Brookhouse at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. Calvin came back with a win at No. 3 singles to rival the Cardinals, but Haizel posted a win against Charlie Fahr at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-2) and Hinch won his match at No. 5 against Cobe Benzel (3-6, 6-1, 10-5).
The score was knotted at 4-4 after Calvin's Brandon Johnson won the No. 6 match and
Victor Krueger came back a win at No. 1, defeating Jose Larrea 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. It was going to come down to the No. 2 match and
Tyler Bussell had to play from behind, dropping the first set 3-6 to Wolters if he were to come away with the win. He rallied back in the second to win 7-6 and then the third, 12-10 to clinch the team's victory.
North Central (12-3) return to the Midwest and begin College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play, hosting Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday, Mar. 29 at noon.
