GEORGETOWN, Texas (Mar. 21, 2019) – A late offensive charge in the fourth period proved too little, too late for the North Central College men's lacrosse team as the Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season to the Southwestern University Pirates (7-4) on Thursday evening.
Southwestern notched the first goal of the contest just over a minute into play, but
Jared Weaver answered back with a goal of his own thirty-seconds later to tie it up. The Pirates added two more goals to extend the lead before Weaver found an opening in the defense to score his second goal of the day with four seconds to go in the first period.
Casimer Plonczynski kept the score close, 3-4 to start the second period, but Southwestern kept the Cardinals off the board with an eight-goal run that continued into the second half and left the Cardinals facing daunting 12-3 deficit. It was Weaver again, followed by
Matt Sheinfeld off of an assist from
Tommy Huizinga, who halted the Pirates' momentum momentarily, but Southwestern continued to pull away to start the final 15 minutes of play with four more goals.
Huizinga added three of the four goals in the final ten minutes of play and ceased any more damage from the opponent, but when the final buzzer went off, it was not enough and the Cardinals' unbeaten streak ended with a 17-9 loss.
Although the Pirates had the advantage at the face-off, winning 21 of the 30, Weaver and Huizinga had game-high three goals while Sheinfeld had two and Ploncyznski one.
Sean Tomonari had a team-high five ground balls and he, along with
John Fitzgerald,
Steven Dale, and
Brandon Pearly had one caused turnover each.
Dylan Cost made 17 save on the 34 shots faced.
North Central (6-1) returns to the Midwest and plays its next game on Saturday, Mar. 30 at Hanover College in Indianapolis. A link to live in-game coverage can be found HERE.
