Balanced Attack Leads Cardinals to 19-2 Rout

NAPERVILLE, Ill.  (Mar. 23, 2019) - Playing their first of two games in as many days, the North Central College women's lacrosse team displayed a full team effort in their 19-2 win against Johnson & Wales University (Colo.) on Saturday, with nine different players scoring goals for the Cardinals.

There was no stopping the Cardinals in the first half, controlling the ball and the scoreboard for the entirety, jumping to a 12-0 lead at the halftime break. Jessica Deetjen scored three of her goals in the first to lead the Cardinals, while Christina Truver, Madeline McHugh, and Annabelle Steiner also added two in the first half.

The second half was much of the same, with the Cardinals outscoring the Wildcats (1-7) 7-2 in the second period. Deetjen added her fourth goal of the game and Christina Truver put in two more to tie her for the team-lead in goals for the game. Steiner added three goals total, with McHugh and Mynk Richardson-Clerk scoring two a piece.

The Cardinals controlled the tempo and the ball for the whole game, only allowing seven shots and causing the Wildcats to turn the ball over 28 times. Berit Vandenbroucke was led the team on defense, with three turnovers caused and three ground balls picked up as well. Additionally, Truver was able to lead the team in ground balls, with six, and draw controls, six.

Abigail Leers received the start in goal for North Central and was awarded her first win of the season. She saved one of the two shots that came her way and did not allow a goal. Elizabeth Wagner came on in relief at the start of the second half and also recorded a save, while allowing two goals.

The Cardinals (6-1) play again tomorrow, March 24, at home against University of Wisconsin- River Falls with game time set for 12 pm. Click HERE for live stats.
