NAPERVILLE, ILL. (Mar. 24, 2019) - Led by a strong second half showing on the defensive end, the North Central College women's lacrosse team caught hold of the lead and did not falter the rest of the game , winning by a convincing 18-6 margin against University of Wisconsin- River Falls on Sunday.
The Cardinals took hold of the lead early on in the contest, taking the lead for good only five minutes into the game on a goal from
Madeline McHugh to make it 2-1. McHugh's goal was then followed by goals from
Jessica Deetjen and
Reilly Pfeiffer to make it a 4-1 game as the Cardinals gained all the momentum. They ended the first half on a 7-3 run to open the score up to 11-4. McHugh and Deetjen shared the scoring load in the first half, both netting three shots.
The second half was much of the same story, with the Cardinals defense locking down the Falcons (2-4) for much of the second half. While the Cardinals allowed five goals in the first half of play, they only allowed one the second half, with
Camille Seghesio denying seven of the Falcon's 10 shots coming after the break. The defensive stands created opportunities for the Cardinals offense, scoring another seven goals in the second period. Deetjen added another two as did
Annabelle Steiner, while McHugh added one more to her tally.
Christina Truver was a force in the midfield for North Central as well, filling up the stat sheet to the tune of one goal, three assists, seven ground balls, four caused turnovers, and six draw controls, leading the team in assists, caused turnovers, and draw controls. Steiner also contributed everywhere, leading the team in ground balls (eight), caused turnovers (four) and also scoring three goals with an assist to her name as well.
The Cardinals (7-1) are on the road on Wednesday, making the short trip to Benedictine University, with game time set for 7 pm.
