NAPERVILLE, ILL. (Apr. 27, 2019) - With snow and rain falling for most of the contest on Saturday, the North Central College women's lacrosse team held off a second-half rally by Carroll University to receive a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) tournament berth as the no. three seed.
The Cardinals looked to be in control from the start, outscoring the Pioneers (10-5, 4-3 CCIW) 8-2 at the end of the first half.
Jessica Deetjen led the Cardinals to the early lead, scoring three goals while also adding an assist.
North Central all but put the game away in the first 12 minutes of the second half, going on a 4-1 run. Carroll came back with furiousity though, scoring five unanswered goals over the next eight minutes, recapturing the momentum and looking to pull even closer. The Cardinals were calm under the duress though, with
Grace Steiner adding her third goal of the day from an assist by
Madeline McHugh to halt the run. Each team added one more goal in the last two minutes of regulation, with the final coming out to 14-10.
Deetjen scored four total goals in the game for the team lead, while Steiner added three and McHugh, Scranton, and
Christina Truver all adding two. Truver also led the team in ground balls (seven), caused turnovers (five), and draw controls (six).
Camille Seghesio saved 10 shots for the Cardinals while giving up the 10 goals as well. She received the win to make her record 12-3 on the season.
The Cardinals (14-3, 5-2 CCIW) move onto the CCIW Tournament, receiving the third seed as a result of their victory. They will take on University of Chicago on May 1. Click
