2019 ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Teams
May 28, 2019 – The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings released its annual All-Region teams on Tuesday, as a trio of North Central College baseball players received the honor, marking the seventh-straight season a Cardinal has earned a spot on the list.
Rob Marinec was named first team All-Central Region catcher, his second-straight first team recognition by the ABCA. Marinec was one of only three underclassmen named to the first team, leading the Cardinals with 11 homeruns, four triples, 53 runs batted in, 116 total bases and a .644 slugging percentage. He also ranked second on the team with 36 walks, including seven intentionally, while swiping 15-of-17 stolen base attempts. Opposing runners attempted only 27 stolen bases on Marinec all season and were thrown out 12 times, good for a 44% caught stealing percentage.
Senior center fielder
Jeremy Quade was named to the second team, his first career all-region nod by the ABCA after leading the team in a multitude of categories this season. Quade led the team hitting .366 with 67 hits, 53 runs scored, 41 walks, 25 stolen bases and a .496 on-base percentage.
Recently wrapping up his record-breaking career, Quade made four-straight NCAA Division III Regional appearances while playing more games than anyone in the history of the program (182). This season also saw the career hits record fall after standing for nearly 31 seasons, as Quade passed North Central Hall of Famer Ken Ritter '88 on the all-time list with 247 career base hits. He also holds the career records for runs scored (196), stolen bases (73) and at-bats (760).
Also earning his first ABCA all-region recognition is
Charlie Klemm, named one of four starting pitchers on the second team. The 2019 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Pitcher of the Year tied the program's single-season wins record, finishing the season an unblemished 9-0 on the mound, tying Gary Whitman who set the record previously in 1984.
His 84 strikeouts this season rank second in a single season in program history, while leading the staff with 69.2 innings pitched. Klemm posted a 2.20 earned run average over his 11 starts this season, while opposing batters hit just .212 against him, allowing only eight extra-base hits all year.
With his first team recognition, Marinec will now be eligible for the 2019 ABCA/Rawlings All-America Team, to be announced the evening of Thursday, May 30.
