LISLE, Ill. (Aug. 31, 2019) – Hosting the 2019-20 season-opening triangular at the Benet Academy Tennis Courts, the North Central College women's tennis team took care of Wartburg College, 7-2 to begin the day before shutting out Concordia University Wisconsin, 9-0 in the afternoon.
North Central (2-0) began the morning with a strong showing in doubles play against Wartburg (1-1), as
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay picked up right where they left off last season with a 8-2 victory over Hannah Fox and Madison Overmann at the No. 1 position.
At No. 2,
Katie McGraw and
Linsy Jante defeated Olivia Phillips and Sydney Powers, 8-5, before
Yaitova Spiegel and
Ellie Gallagher fought off Lauren O'Brian and Rebekah Corson, 8-6 at the No. 3 spot to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles play, Hougland was the first to finish at the No. 1 spot with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 win over Fox, before the Knights got on the board with a win at the No. 4 position. After another Wartburg win at the No. 6 spot cut the Cardinal lead in half, Kanthaphixay clinched the match win at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set victory over Overmann.
Just for good measure, McGraw took down O'Brian, 7-5, 6-4, while
Morgan House clawed out a tough 6-3, 6-7, 14-12 nail biter to round out the scoring.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, as Spiegel and Gallagher put North Central on the board first with a 8-3 win at the No. 3 position over Ashley Saniter and Antonia Sanna. McGraw and Jante followed with a 8-6 victory over Rebekah Spiegelhoff and Mia Andrae at No. 2, before Hougland and Kanthaphixay were victorious by an identical 8-6 score at the No. 1 spot over Ricki Budewitz and Elizabeth Johnson.
Carrying that momentum into singles play, Kanthaphixay rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Johnson, ahead of Hougland who clinched the match win for the Cardinals with a 6-0, 6-2 shellacking of Budewitz at No. 1.
Jante continued the winning streak with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Julia Vitale, while McGraw downed Sanna, 6-1, 7-6 at No. 3. At the No. 5 position, House needed just two sets to take care of Spiegelhoff, 6-2, 7-6, while Spiegel completed the match sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set win over Andrae at No. 6.
North Central begins a stretch of five-straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) matches on Wednesday, Sept. 4, hosting Carroll University at Nike Park with matches slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
