The North Central College women's tennis team opened College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play on a high note with a hard fought 7-2 win over Carroll University on Wednesday at Nike Park.

Starting the evening with doubles play, Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay were quick to defeat Grace Krueger and Ashley LaBelle, 8-2 at the No. 1 position to put the Cardinals on the board.

Yaitova Spiegel and Ellie Gallagher then teamed up to take down Francesca Grimes and Rachel Papp, 8-4 at the No. 3 spot, but the Pioneers (2-2, 0-1 CCIW) avoided the doubles sweep with a 8-5 victory at No. 2.

In singles play, Katie McGraw increased the Cardinal lead 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-0 straight-set win over Carolyn Merkatoris at No. 3.

Carroll refused to go down without a fight however, cutting the lead to one yet again with a win at No. 6, but Linsy Jante gave North Central some breathing room soon after, scoring a 6-4, 6-3 win over Maya Gaedtke at the No. 4 position.

Holding a 4-2 lead in the match and coming off her CCIW Player of the Week honor earlier today, Alaina Kanthaphixay clinched the match for North Central with a 6-2, 7-5 defeat of LaBelle at the No. 2 spot.

Hougland then followed with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Krueger at No. 1, while Morgan House closed out the scoring with a thrilling 6-2, 3-6, 16-14 marathon win over Lora Leach at No. 5.

North Central (3-0, 1-0 CCIW) returns to Nike Park on Friday, Sept. 6, playing host to conference foe Illinois Wesleyan University at 3 p.m.
