NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 17, 2019) - Keeping the score close despite being on the defense for most of the contest, the North Central College women's soccer team saw an upset bid of no. 20 University of Chicago slip through their grasp due to a late Maroons goal on Tuesday, dropping the game by a 2-1 final.

The Cardinals found themselves backpedaling for most of the first half as the 20th-ranked Maroons (4-1) controlled the ball and attacked with fervor, not allowing a single North Central shot throughout the half and managing seven for themselves. The Cardinals held strong though, with goalkeeper Madison Lockard saving four shots. The first score of the contest came in the 31st minute, with Hanna Watkins taking a corner kick from Rachel Dias and scoring her fourth goal on the season to put the Maroons up 1-0.

North Central came out of the second half with determination though, pushing the pace and creating chances for themselves. Those chances paid off in the 76th minute, when Allyson Viederis caught the Chicago goalkeeper out of position and booted a rocket from 30 yards out over her head, out of her reach, and in the back of the net.

Following the equalizer, Chicago found the motivation they needed to pull ahead and did just that, with Adriana Shutler doing a clever give-and-go with Katie Jasminski, curving the ball around Lockard's outstretched hands to give Chicago the lead for good in the 85th minute.

Chicago out-shot the Cardinals throughout the game by a 14-4 margin as well by a 7-1 margin in shots on goal. Lockard saved five shots in the game as she drops to 4-3-1 on the season.

The Cardinals (4-3-1) are off until Sept. 21, when they travel to Calvin College to take on the Knights. The game is set for 2:30 pm (ET).
