LISLE, Ill. (Sept. 7, 2019) -- Improving to 3-0 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play and 5-0 on the season, the North Central College women's tennis team posted a 9-0 shutout over Millikin University on Saturday at the Benet Academy Tennis Courts.
Continuing their dominant run in doubles play to begin the season, the Cardinals quickly opened up a 3-0 lead over the Big Blue (3-2, 1-1 CCIW) as
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay were no match for Brianna Barconi and Shelby Jones at the No. 1 position, scoring a 8-1 victory.
At the No. 2 spot,
Katie McGraw and
Linsy Jante were victorious over Danielle Beard and Katie Cooper, 8-4, while
Ellie Gallagher and
Yaitova Spiegel completed the doubles sweep with a 8-5 win at No. 3 over Morgan Bettner and Alena Hinch.
Carrying that momentum into singles play, Gallagher increased the lead 4-0 with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 showing over Amber Rezinas, before Kanthaphixay clinched the match win for North Central with an equally dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Barconi at No. 2.
Morgan House was the next to finish at the No. 5 spot, cruising in straight 6-1 sets over Cooper, while Hougland rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bettner at the No. 1 position. McGraw continued the stretch of straight-set wins with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of Jones, before Jante secured the shutout, clawing out a 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 win over Beard at No. 4.
The Cardinals (5-0, 3-0 CCIW) wrap up the current six-match homestand on Thursday, Sept. 12, welcoming Augustana College to Nike Park with matches slated for 3 p.m.
