CHICAGO (Jan. 15, 2020)— The tenth-ranked North Central College men's wrestling team kept its momentum going on Wednesday, posting a 22-15 victory over the University of Chicago Maroons in a performance highlighted by sophomore
Cody Baldridge's defeat of a nationally-ranked opponent.
With an agreement to open the meet at 149-pounds,
Anthony Rink quickly got things started for North Central by picking up four points via major decision over Grant Morrison (12-4). But the Maroons and Cardinals traded blows as Steve Bonsall earned a decision over
Rafael Roman (8-3) at 157-lbs before
Jacob Boumans took the 165-lbs match with a 5-3 decision. Â Chicago tied the score at seven as Kyle Peisker, the No. 2-ranked 174-pound Division III wrestler in the nation, recorded a major decision over
Brock Montford.
With the score tied,
Cody Baldridge—ranked ninth at 184-pounds—delivered a huge victory over fifth-ranked Ben Sarasin with a 6-4 decision to put North Central back ahead, 10-7. Next up at 197-lbs,
Ben Bergen tacked on three more points with another decision (8-7). Although Chicago's Cole Fibranz won the heavyweight match over
Cameron Martin (Dec. 9-5) to cut the lead to 13-10, two-consecutive North Central victories put the Cardinals squarely in the driver's seat.
Enzo Silva was credited with a forfeit at 125-pounds before
Robert Precin won at 133-lbs with a 5-3 decision, extending the lead to 22-10. Ryan Fleck gave the Maroons their final points of the night with a 19-3 tech fall over
Isaac Martinez at 141-lbs, but it proved too little, too late for the hosts.
North Central travels to Elmhurst College on Jan. 18 for the Al Hanke Invitational, set to start at 9 a.m.
