LAKE GENEVA, Wis. (Feb. 16, 2020) – Hitting a bit of a rough patch early on this season, the North Central College men's tennis team dropped another close non-conference match on Sunday, falling 5-4 to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in a neutral site dual contested inside Lake Geneva Tennis Club.
UW-La Crosse (3-3) opened the scoring with a win at the No. 3 doubles position, but the Cardinals rebounded to even the score as
Colten Way and
Andy Hinch scored a 8-4 win over Alex Alt and Riley Peterson at the No. 1 position.
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez and
Javier Suarez Balsera then gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead with a tightly contested 8-6 victory over Grant Counts and Alex Moore at the No. 2 spot.
Heading into singles play with a slight advantage, the Eagles quickly turned the tables with a pair of victories at each of the No. 5 and No. 1 positions before Way was able to tie the match score at three with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Counts at the No. 3 spot.
A win at No. 5 for UW-La Crosse forced the Cardinals into a corner with just two matches to play, but Suarez Balsera was able to once again tie the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 position over Peterson. With the match all knotted 4-4 and
Jeremiah Joyce squaring off with Sam Diedrich at the No. 6 position, it was Diedrich who got the best of the Cardinal freshman, scoring a straight-set win to had the Cardinals a 5-4 defeat.
North Central (2-3) returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 22, hosting a non-conference triangular inside Five Star Tennis in Plainfield, Illinois, opening with Central College (Iowa) at 1:30 p.m., followed by Concordia University Wisconsin in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
