PLAINFIELD, Ill. (Feb. 22, 2020) – Snapping a three-match losing streak, the North Central College men's tennis team returned to the win column with a pair of non-conference victories on Saturday inside Five Star Tennis, scoring a 8-1 win over Central College in the opener before closing the day scoring a 7-2 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin.
North Central (4-3) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Central (1-7) in the opener, as
Colten Way and
Andy Hinch began the scoring with a 8-2 victory over William Isiminger and Brad DiLeo at the No. 1 position.
Following at the No. 2 spot,
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez and
Javier Suarez Balsera scored a decisive 8-1 win over David Boschma and Trey Melvin, before
Jeremiah Joyce and
Justin Howes made it a clean sweep with a 8-6 decision over Tanner Finken and Ethan St. John at No. 3.
North Central wasted no time in securing the match win in singles play, as Gonzalez Fernandez set up match point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Isiminger at the No. 1 spot, before Way clinched the match win with a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of Finken at No. 3.
Suarez Balsera scored an equally decisive 6-2, 6-2 win over Boschma at No 2, ahead of Hinch who scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kris Weeden at the No. 4 spot.
Steven Mears then extended the Cardinal lead 8-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of St. John at No. 6, before Central avoided the shutout with a tiebreaker win at No. 5.
In the evening match with Concordia-Wisconsin (3-4), the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead into singles play as Gonzalez Fernandez and Suarez Balsera opened the scoring with a 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Christian Docter and Cole Werning.
Way and Hinch then followed with a 8-5 win over Nolan Rademacher and Logan Snyder, before the Falcons cut the lead in half with a tightly contested 8-7 match at the No. 3 position.
In singles play the Cardinals scored three-straight wins to clinch the match victory, as Way rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing of Gabe Binversie at the No. 3 position, before Mears made quick work of Nathan Raskin, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot to increase the lead 4-2.
Clinching the match win for North Central was Suarez Balsera at the No. 2 position, scoring an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory over Rademacher. Gonzalez Fernandez followed shortly after with a 6-1, 7-6 defeat of Docter, while Hinch turned in a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Snyder.
North Central is null until its annual Spring Break trip to Orlando, Florida, opening play on Sunday, Mar. 1 against Oglethorpe University (Georgia) with matches scheduled for 12 p.m. (ET) at Sanlando Park.
