ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 2, 2020) – Continuing to roll early this spring season, the North Central College women's tennis team posted a pair of dominant wins on Monday at Sanlando Park, taking down Concordia College (Minnesota) in the opener 8-1 before shutting out Houghton College, 9-0 to close out the day.
In the morning match against Concordia (2-6), the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead after doubles play as
Katie McGraw and
Ellie Gallagher were no match for Emily Savageau and Abby Westrum at the No. 3 position, as the duo rolled to a 8-0 shutout.
Sydney Sawyer and
Linsy Jante followed with a quick 8-1 defeat of Izzi Nankivel and Carlyn Voss at the No. 2 spot, before
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay completed the doubles sweep with a 8-2 win over Raquel Egge and Jenna Forknell at No. 1.
North Central (11-2) wasted little time in securing the match win in singles play, as Jante opened scoring at the No. 5 position, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Taylor Partington. McGraw then followed up with a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing of Voss at the No. 4 spot, sealing the match win for the Cardinals.
Pushing the score to 7-0 were Sawyer at the No. 3 spot with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Nankivel, and Hougland with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Egge atop the lineup. The Cobbers avoided the match sweep with a win at No. 2, but
Morgan House ended the match with a 6-3, 6-7, 10-6 thriller over Brianna Bell at the No. 6 position.
In the nightcap, North Central was no match for Houghton (5-10), as the Cardinals dropped just one set over the entire match en route to the easy shutout. The scoring began with a win by default at No. 3 doubles for House and
Tiffany Smolik, while Hougland and Kanthaphixay scored a 8-0 win at No. 1 and McGraw and Gallagher followed suit at No. 2.
Another win by default at the No. 6 singles position pulled the Cardinal to within one of the match victory, as Jante capped the win shortly after in straight 6-0 sets at No. 3.
Hougland then defeated Erin Haley, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 position, before 6-0, 6-0 wins from each of
Yaitova Spiegel, Smolik and Sawyer at positions 4, 5 and 2, respectively.
With a day off tomorrow, the Cardinals return to play on Wednesday, Mar. 4 with two more matches contested at Sanlando Park, beginning with Emerson College (Massachusetts) at 12 p.m. (ET) and ends their trip to Florida against NCAA Division I opponent Hampton University (Virginia) at 6 p.m. (ET).
