NAPLES, Fla. (Mar. 6th, 2020) - On day two of the Gene Cusic Classic, the North Central College softball team picked up a pair of one-run wins as they beat Grove City College 3-2, and Drew University 1-0 in Naples, Fla.
Breannd Adams took the mound for the Cardinals, and continued her hot performance as she held the Wolverines hitless through the first three innings. In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Adams reached first base on a Grove City error, bringing
Molly Cann to the plate. She took first base on a fielder's choice which was overthrown by the Wolverine first baseman, bringing Adams around to score and give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. After another Wolverine error and past ball,
Lisa Harrington doubled to bring home Cann and
Andrea Richards to increase North Central's lead to 3-0.
Grove City responded in the sixth inning as their leadoff hitter reached on a Cardinal error. Following two outs, Haley Dietz reached on North Central's second error of the inning, moving Sarah Eidle to third base. Eidle would come around to score on another Cardinal error to score their first run of the game, but Adams would limit the damage and hold Grove City to the one run.Â
The Wolverines entered the top half of the final inning down two runs, but Ashley Mietlicki led of the seventh inning with a double and would score on a Michaela Ban single. North Central's defense would close out the game as Cann turned an unassisted double play to give the Cardinal's their second victory of the season.
Adams improved to 2-0 on the year as she struck out seven, walked none and allowed one earned run. Mariah Francis of Grove City falls to 0-1 as she allowed zero earned runs and struck out five. Â
In game two,
Gianna Corban turned in her first shutout of the season as she went all seven innings and struck out four. Offensively for the Cardinals,
Emily Miller began the action in the fourth inning as she reached on a single. After a Drew error, Adams would walk to load the bases. Richards stepped to the plate and fouled out to left field, but it was deep enough for Miller to score from third base as the Cardinals net the lone run of the game.
Corban moves to 1-0 on the year and lowers her earned run average to 3.65 over 7.2 innings pitched.
North Central begins their day tomorrow against Clark University at 9:00 am (ET) before facing Elms College at 11:00 am (ET) in Fort Myers, Fla. at Century Links Sports Complex 1.
